How Is Child Support Calculated?
Washington has a statutory formula that is used to calculate child support payments. Each parent’s income and the number and ages of the children are used to find the basic or presumptive level of support. In most cases, the presumptive level of support is what the court orders, but there are exceptions.
The courts have discretion to deviate from the statutory schedule if the children spend substantial time with parent paying support. If a child has special needs, he or she may require additional support. Parents with very low income may pay reduced payments if the basic level of support would place them below the federal poverty guidelines.
